3-Days 2-nights Dong Phouvieng Trekking

Katang trail to the Secret Forest Dongphouvieng National Protected Area

Day One

Leave the Marvelaos Office at 7:30. Drive 4 hours to Phin District where you'll stop by the District Forestry office for information and a brief orientation. From there, head straight to the forest for a picnic lunch of local food before the trek begins. The first day, you’ll walk about 10 km into the jungle before arriving at a Katang Village. At the village, you’ll be received with a traditional blessing ceremony, spend time with the villagers learning a few words of the Katang language, and observe their lifestyle including rice hulling, weaving, sewing, and cooking. Sleep in traditional village housing with a local family.

Day Two

After early morning coffee, you’ll walk through the sacred Saky forest to see endangered monkeys (red and silver langurs). Return to the village for breakfast and to say goodbye. The second day you’ll walk about 14 km to the next Katang Village through diverse ecosystems including mixed forest, dry jungle, rocky outcroppings and bamboo forests. During the trek the guides will tell the beliefs and myths of the forest, as well as explain the use of natural resources like mushroom, resin, rattan, bamboo, and various other plants and trees. You’ll also walk past caves and learn about ancient burial practices and ancestor beliefs. Arrive at the second Katang Village with time to swim and play in the nearby Xebanghieng River. After a delicious home cooked local dinner, you’ll be treated to a musical performance with traditional instruments. Sleep in traditional village housing with a local family.

Day Three

The final day of your trek you’ll walk about 4km along the river, and learn about trade routes and travel paths, seeing historic cart tracks and legendary treasure hiding spots. At the riverbank you’ll be picked up by long motorboats and enjoy a leisurely hour long boat ride down the river before meeting the transport back to Phin, and then return to Savannakhet
